There are over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations in the country, according to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, and many serve military servicemen and women, and veterans. Not all of these nonprofits are created equal. There are some that stand out because of the unique communities they serve. The EOD Warrior Foundation is one of those non-profit organizations that stands out, for numerous reasons. Many people want to support worthwhile causes, but they don’t always know which ones to contribute to. Being able to determine what sets a non-profit apart helps people make more informed decisions.

“When you find an organization that you know is doing critical work, then you can feel great supporting them,” explains Nicole Motsek, executive director of the EOD Warrior Foundation. “It’s all about finding the right one, and for many people we are fortunate to be that charity.”

While there are many things that help to make the EOD Warrior Foundation a unique non-profit, there are some things that stand out. Here are 5 things that set the EOD Warrior Foundation apart:

  1. Their focus. The EOD Warrior Foundation is an organization that helps the families of the 7,000 active duty servicemen and women across all four branches of the military who are Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians, disarming and rendering safe explosive devices. These warriors engage in the most dangerous job in the military, and often sustain serious injuries, lose limbs, or are killed in action. The EOD Warrior Foundation supports injured EOD warriors and the families of fallen EOD warriors, and also works to improve the lives of EOD warriors once they return home, and includes a focus on suicide prevention.
  2. Their mission. The mission of the organization is to improve the quality of life for the EOD family by providing financial relief, scholarship opportunities, physical, social, and emotional support. Through their scholarship program, they gave away $212,000 in scholarships to 116 recipients in 2017. Last year, they hosted 12 therapeutic healing retreats serving warriors, Gold Star Widows, Caregivers, couples and families.
  3. Their memorial. The EOD Warrior Foundation has a memorial wall that is located at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. The EOD Memorial Wall honors the EOD technicians who made the ultimate sacrifice while carrying out an EOD mission. Every year, on the first Saturday in May, there is a ceremony held at the wall to commemorate the fallen EOD warriors and preserve their legacy. The EOD Memorial Wall is open to visitors.
  4. Their transparency. Many people are distrustful of organizations because they aren’t confident about the way donated funds are allocated or spent. The EOD Warrior Foundation maintains transparency by publishing all of their financial reports on their website. Additionally, the EOD Warrior Foundation is accredited by the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, and rated on both Charity Navigator and Guidestar.
  5. Their opportunities. Every year, the organization hosts a wide variety of fundraising events and activities, offering something for everyone. Those who want to support the organization can donate directly, organize a fundraising event, run in a 5K, play in a golf tournament, or even take a polar plunge into cold winter waters. Other yearly events include memorial workouts, bike rides, a holiday party, and more.

“We are very committed to this community, and love what we are doing,” added Motsek. “We are honored to give back to this group of men and women, and their families, who sacrifice so much for our country. We look forward to many years ahead as we continue to serve deserving EOD warriors and their families.”

The EOD Warrior Foundation helps this elite group by providing financial relief, therapeutic healing retreats, a scholarship program, care of the EOD Memorial Wall located at Eglin AFB, Fla. and more. Their work is supported by private donations and the generosity of those who support the organization.
