British Financier: Trump’s Rhetoric Hurts Brand U.S.A., World Economy

London, England. Donald Trump’s rhetoric is “damaging brand U.S.A” internationally and could hit the American economy and jobs, warns the C.E.O. of one of the world’s largest independent financial advisory organizations.

The warning from Nigel Green, chief executive and founder of deVere Group, comes after the billionaire frontrunner in the Republican presidential candidate race this week launched his campaign’s first television advert.

The 30-second commercial reiterates again the magnate’s highly controversial call to ban entry to all Muslims into the U.S. and to build a border wall “paid for by Mexico.” 

Mr. Green observes: “Unsurprisingly, in his first campaign advert Mr Trump has opted to repeat his sensationalist remarks.

“This was to be expected as the more extreme he becomes the more free headlines he generates for his campaign.

“Many outside the hard core of the conservative Republican electorate to whom he is pitching his message are dismissing Trump’s bombastic bluster as a sideshow in the wider scheme of the political sphere.

“This is a mistake. Trump’s rhetoric is damaging brand U.S.A internationally – and that could have adverse effects on the American economy and American jobs.

“What he says matters, as it is garnering nonstop media coverage globally; he has been dominating and continues to dominate the political conversation domestically and internationally and this could have wider, longer-term adverse effects.

“Few people outside the U.S. would usually care about the race at this stage, but Trump’s controversial religious and racial views have changed the status quo.”

He continues: “Famously, Trump has called for a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S. and to build a border wall with Mexico, after linking Mexican immigrants with crimes such as rape and drug trafficking. 

“Naturally, Latino and Gulf-based corporations were quick to slam the remarks and distance themselves from any dealings with Trump or his subsidiary companies.

“Europe is not immune from Trump’s inflammatory comments. He has insulted both the German leader, Angela Merkel, and the French Ambassador to the U.S., and he has accused the U.K of disguising its ‘massive Muslim problem’, which prompted the Prime Minister, David Cameron to deliver a rebuke the billionaire businessman.

“I think we can be in no doubt that if Trump were to win the GOP candidate race, there would be real concerns over foreign direct investment issues from job and wealth creating international individuals and corporations as well as overseas government agencies. 

“Should this happen, it would, clearly, affect the American economy and American jobs. And, of course, this would have a knock-on effect on the global economy.”

Mr. Green concludes: “Trump flies in the face of the message that the U.S. is open for business. He is detrimental to America’s hard-earned and invaluable pro-business reputation. 

“The world is ever-more globalized and that trend is only going to accelerate, yet it seems Trump is trying to drag America back to an era that’s long gone. 

“America needs to cherish and nurture its enviable international brand that is likely to increasingly fuel its long-term sustainable economic growth.”
