Success with Perseverance, Undaunted Commitment and Support

By Julian English, 2019 Luce 24 Under 24 Award Recipient

New York, N.Y. In a world where there are so many influences, options, and mixed messages, it is hard for young people to decide to step up and be leaders. If such is the case, it is even more difficult for someone with special needs like me to keep being motivated and striving. I had many dreams that I was unsure I could achieve but with perseverance, undaunted commitment and support, I have accomplished a lot.

For example, I adore cars. I spend hours learning about them on the internet and want to know the signature roar of each car. They are such a part of my life… but because of my disability and inability to read and write easily, I was doubtful that driving would ever be a reality for me.

But because of my mother, who has encouraged and supported me in finding solutions for all my limitations including taking me one million miles worldwide and then co/authoring a book with me, she helped me find a way to pass my permit drivers license exam. With the help of a dedicated teacher who took my notes, translated them in a way I could comprehend and then read me the test and answer choices, I was able to pass the test with flying colors. I am now a proud permitted driver!

I have countless such stories of triumph over adversity and of charting a unique course to find solutions for my disability and to advocate for myself. I hope to inspire others to never give up.

By showing perseverance in the face of frustration and adversity, I hope I have demonstrated that leadership is about setting an example, creating new paths and leaving a roadmap that makes it easier for others to find their way to a successful outcome—no matter what the challenges may be.

At twelve years old, I penned a book with my mother, No Limits: No Boundaries! My Journey Through the ABC’s, which gave me a huge sense of pride…and instilled in me that with the proper tools and support, there are no limits. Because of this, I was invited to the White House to meet President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act.

At 15, I am a Global Messenger for the Special Olympics, play tennis and run track, and was featured on a statewide poster for Chick-fil-A.

I have learned that nothing is impossible if one commits to finding a way. Leadership is a commitment. Leadership is an effort. Leadership is believing and leadership is action…whether abled or differently-abled, the qualities of global leadership is leading by example. I hope I have done that and am excited to keep moving forward to see what new challenges await given the opportunity to find new and improved ways of supporting my community.
