Poem: For Emma Lazarus – And All Who Remember

For Emma Lazarus
(And all who remember)

Take back your tired and your poor.
We do not want them anymore.
Emma does not understand
the real story of our land.

Keep your children at bay.
I decline to pray
but travail truly rules our days.

I in my cups or dotage
cannot bear this longer.

You I thought were strong
but ere your bubble bursts
your ersatz gods expire
Remember this. Forget the choir:
It will cost you dear.
