Marietta College Central America Trip: Leadership & Conservation

Marietta, Ohio. In May 2015, we took a group of leadership students to Costa Rica and Belize to study Conservation within the context of leadership. Through this trip, we studied the ways leaders work with followers within their culture to achieve the goal of ecological conservation and sustainability. Dr. Robert McManus, McCoy Associate Professor of Leadership and Communication, and Dr. David Brown, McDonough Affiliated Professor from the Biology Department, led the trip.

Trip Description: We met with leaders from The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and local environmentalists. We also swam a coastal reef, hiked through rainforests, and visited Mayan ruins. Guest professor Benjamin W. Redekop, author of Leadership for Environmental Sustainability , traveled with us. We used his text as part of the course. In addition, we performed a service project focused on environmental conservation. The trip included students from Christopher Newport University.
This trip was part of a three-credit hour course (LEAD 350: Leadership Study Abroad, 3 credit hours). It fulfilled the General Education requirement for Marietta College students. It can also be counted as an elective for the Certificate and Minor in Leadership Studies, as well as the international experiential education requirement for the International Leadership Studies Major.
